A Little Piece of Ground by Elizabeth Laird
An extraordinary book about war and peace through the eyes of a young Palestinian boy
This is a story about Palestinian boys living under the Israeli military occupation. Theirs is a particular experience, in a particular time and place, but all such occupations are harsh, causing great suffering to the occupied people, and misery to the occupying army. The boys in this book stand for all who live their lives in such circumstances and manage, against the odds, to go on growing up.

Suggestions for action around the above book.

1. Have gatherings of youth in homes.  Include middle school, high school and college-aged young people to do readings from the book.  Encourage them to get a copy for a teacher and introduce the book to their American friends. PCRF will pay for Pizza.

2. Donate $50.00 and up towards copies of the book and PCRF will pay postage to ship the books to you. Then you give the book to teachers and libraries for Christmas. ($10/copy)

3. Have a pot-luck luncheon for adults. Invite your friends, have them purchase copies and do readings from the book.  Then encourage them to donate the book to a school library, public library, college library, etc.

4. Volunteer to sell the book at your mosque, church, family gathering, etc. It is a book that every teacher of social studies should read and, where relevant, incorporate in courses.  It paints a telling picture of life under occupation.

5. College kids, give the book as a gift to your college English professor teaching English classes.  It's a good, well-written story that would provide a good model for a college literature or writing class.  And, of course, it tells a story that urgently needs to be told.

The above is a youth educational project sponsored by PCRF/ZAWAYA.
